What’s your favorite place in the entire world?
Disneyland. I love it and every year I pack up my kids and we spend a week there. Next to that it’s the Gulf Islands, each one is a jewel, and absolutely unique.
When and why did you begin writing?
For me, I have a need to write. I had always journaled. But never sat down to write a story. I am and always have been an avid reader. I devour books. And it was in 2003 I had this dream abut story and I sat down and started writing. I don’t know how long it took me but every morning before my children were awake I would be up two to three hours before them just writing.
How long have you been writing?
I began my writing career in 2003, that’s when I sat down to write my first novel. Now getting published is a different story, I didn’t receive an offer for publication until 2008.
What genre are you most comfortable writing?
It’s a tie really between Western Romance and Romantic Suspense.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I had a dream. Seriously, I did. It was this story and then I had a need to write it. Everyone morning I got up really early before my kids were awake and I wrote the story. It was then titled The Captain’s Lady, the publisher made some changes,but I received the rights back and with the help of my editor I rewrote the book, gave it a brand new title, and I believe now it’s a stronger story.
It is vital to get exposure and target the right readers for your writing, tell us about your marketing campaign?
Yes absolutely. You have to understand your genre first. And then find the readers. Blog tours, ads on relevant sites for your books genre, book blasts, ads on goodreads.
How often do you write? And when do you write?
I try to write every day, and always in the morning. Unfortunately as of late though I am getting only about five mornings to write.
Do you have an organized process or tips for writing well? Do you have a writing schedule?
You have to be organized to write. I am a single mother so I really have to organize, and be fiercely protective of my writing time. Every morning I write. I do not schedule meetings, appointments anything in the mornings if it can be helped. And I’ve had to tell people no, do not phone, drop by or anything in the morning, unless it is an emergency. And I try to write ten pages a day in that time, most days I can do it.
Have you met any people in the industry who have really helped you?
Yes I have. I have teamed up with an amazing group of authors some formerly traditionally published, and all using the Amazon platform and cross promoting each other. The one thing about our group, we play to win. Everyone is driven, succcessful, and some amazing authors. Two mentions are Carolyn McCray and Taylor Lee, there are many others behind the scenes as well, but Carolyn and Taylor have been two key authors in my success and have shared so much valuable information to stay at the top of my game.
What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?
I always hope that first and foremost that people will enjoy my stories. And for them to feel the emotion and injustice in the story my characters are living. Everyone is going to take something different away, they will either love or hate my characters. But the one thing I want people to feel good.
How do you tell a man there is something wrong with his child?
This is by far one of the best books I have read. Lorhainne Eckhart proved herself yet again by pulling you in with a heartfelt story and keeping your attention with the passion that fills the pages. ~ ROMANCE JUNKIES

Genre – Contemporary Western Romance
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT? I am passionate about several things: Gun control, the environment and whales. The first one I feel totally inadequate to do anything about other than sign petitions and speak out when I can. The second, the environment, I have been able to do something in a small way. With a small group of friends we published the first Green Guide to Costa Rica which continues to do good by helping people choose how to live more sustainable lives, how to protect their environment and how leave the smallest footprint. And my third passion – whales – I have been over-awed by the company of whales since 1998 when I took my daughter to Maui to work on a whale research project. The following year I took my son on a similar project in Newfoundland, in the North Atlantic. Since then I have gone back to Newfoundland almost every year and recognize many whales who return to the same spot (outside my window) every year. To me communing with whales up close in their own environment is an extraordinary experience. I feel privileged to be in their presence. HOW IMPORTANT ARE YOUR FRIENDS IN YOUR LIFE? As a world traveller I am often not around to appreciate my friends enough. But I am fortunate to have friends that are happy to indulge my travels and forgive my absences. And, when I return to the fold, it is always as though I have never been away. These are true friends. And, yes, they do matter. Along with my children, they represent solidity and endurance. WHAT DOES LOVE MEAN TO YOU? Love is very hard to describe. Even when I am “in love” I am not really sure what that means. In truth I don’t think I’ve ever been “head over heels” in love with someone (other than teenage crushes!) where I have felt I simply cannot live without this person. My independent streak has unconsciously overtaken my emotions because I know how happy I am living alone. Yes, it is lovely to share life with someone you love, doing things you enjoy together, talking about your day and discussing your favourite topics. Love is definitely a beautiful state. I love my children. I love my grandchildren. But I also love my solitude, my peace and my tranquility and that only come with being single. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SELF-PUBLISHING?
I think I can only answer that question after I’ve been fully through the experience. I can then compare it to being published and marketed by a regular publisher. One thing I can say it is far more work for the author publishing independently. The competition out there, now than anyone and everyone can write and publish a book, is intense. But I’m enjoying the process. WHAT’S THE REASON FOR YOUR LIFE? HAVE YOU FIGURED OUT YOUR REASON FOR BEING HERE YET? That’s a deep question – the age-old conundrum: Why are we here? What are we doing? What does it all mean? Even the greatest minds in our world cannot agree on this. And I certainly haven’t worked out the answer. I turn to the Monty Python team and their hilarious movie, “The Meaning of Life” So, rather than speculate on the many hypotheses put forward by philosophers, priests and people who think they know all the answers, I would prefer to watch “The Meaning of Life” and accept that no one has a clue why we are here and what we are doing.

What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing? The fact that my stories and my novels are no longer entombed in a hard drive, but are alive and being read by people all over the world, is a childhood dream come true. What books did you love growing up? The books which formed me are Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, Beauty by Robin McKinley, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lioness Rampant series by Tamora Pierce, among others. As a young teen, I devoured an unholy amount of Barbara Cartland novels because they were chaste enough to satisfy my mother. Who is your favorite author? Beauty by Robin McKinley has inspired me in so many ways. It’s responsible for my lifelong love of fairy tales, especially Beauty and the Beast. McKinley’s exquisite prose captivated me when I was a child and it inspires me as a writer today. What genre of books do you adore? I tend to devour books that are outside of the genres in which I write, which means narrative nonfiction, literary, young adult/middle grade, women’s fiction, science books, and travel guides. What do you hope your obituary will say about you? She lived a life as exciting as a plot from one of her books.

Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl I thought the lyrics represented the mood of the book, the sense a wounded veteran might feel returning to the states to find everything in his life has changed. Tell us why did you wrote it? I’ve always been fascinated by how we perceive reality. Think of the film Rashomon, the classic exploration of multiple realities, where several witnesses to a crime describe events completely differently, each bringing their own life experience and biases into play. But it’s when we’re ripped from our normal life and placed in extreme circumstances that our reality becomes totally fragmented. Such is the case with hospitals and war. At the same time, I’d become engrossed in playing the online fantasy game, World of Warcraft, with my son, an avid player. With me on the east coast on him on the west, he suggested we meet weekly in the fantasy world of Azeroth—an invitation I could hardly resist. For several months, we had a Wednesday evening appointment, where our avatars would meet in this virtual world and go on quests together. I was struck by how totally immersed I could get in the game, how quickly time passed and the surreal mood of wandering around in castles and crypts, solving riddles and following quests. The fantasy gaming experience has a dream-like quality to it. And I began to wonder: how would this experience affect the dreams of someone whose reality has been fragmented by war, PTSD and traumatic brain injury. These concepts—war, hospitals, and the fantasy world of online gaming—came together in Along the Watchtower. When you are not writing, how do you like to relax? Long walks, bicycling, golf, dinner with a few close friends, time with my family, and travel. Do you have any tips on how writers can relax? Naps work well. One writer once said she liked to write in the morning after waking and after naps, so she could go from one dream world to another.

How do you write lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk? Lap top in bed, or as now on couch, but have used pen and paper at a desk.
Where do you get support from? Do you have friends in the industry? I have a childhood friend that died while I was writing That Girl and he wrote some of Hollywood’s top films. Another childhood friend produced some famous movies and his father was Chairman of one of the largest movie production companies, yet I have not called on them for any help.
How much sleep do you need to be your best? 8 hours
Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge and thank for their support? My family
Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you? If only one person is blessed by what I have written, then that is success to me. Secondarily, I believe I have already succeeded in knowing that there are so many people that love my books, even those that hate my books, that is a form of success, because they have been moved enough to comment with words such as “Worst book I ever read”. For me it isn’t so much about money but about inspiring others and bringing enjoyment to them through story telling. My success can lead to others being inspired to write and tell their own stories. My youngest son makes me tell him a story every night and while I am usually too exhausted, the words come for no other purpose than for his enjoyment.

How do you feel about Facebook and Twitter? I like both, but I tend to be more of a Facebook person. I really enjoy keeping up with friends on my personal page, and I love hearing from readers on the Dance For A Dead Princess Facebook page. Are you a city slicker or a country lover? I really love both. I’ve always lived in the city, but my grandparents had farms. I loved to visit them when I was little. Farm work is very hard work, but there is a wonderful rhythm to it as the seasons pass. I loved visiting the garden and feeding the animals. What’s the reason for your life? I’m here to tell stories, to celebrate love and family, and to make people laugh. How many friends does a person need? If you have just a few really loyal friends, that’s all you need. The color red represents my personality.

What contributes to making a writer successful? Persistence. Without persistence you don’t create a good book outline, write the manuscript, proofread it, make corrections, and revise it. I’ve revised chapters 20 times before I was satisfied. You’ve given workshops at regional and national conferences. What makes your workshops helpful? When I plan a conference workshop, I tell my grief recovery story, weave it into research findings, and share proactive steps that attendees may take to improve their lives. If I’ve helped only one person the planning, the trip, and the effort were worth it. Tell us about your new book. Happy Again! Your New and Meaningful Life After Loss is my latest book. It’s a concise grief recovery resource for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one or friend. From the first page to the last, Happy Again! assures the reader that happiness is possible and lists proactive steps he or she may take to achieve it. This is my 32nd book and I’m proud of it. Tell us a bit about your family. In 2007 my family changed after four family members — my elder daughter, father-in-law, brother, and former son-in-law – died within nine months. My daughter died from the injuries she received in a car crash. None months later her former husband died from the injuries he received in another car crash. His death made my twin grandchildren orphans and my husband and me GRGs, grandparents raising grandchildren. The twins were 15 ½ years old when they moved in with us. Today, they are 21 years old and seniors in college. Nurturing, caring and loving my grandkids has been the greatest blessing of my life. How do you work through self-doubts and fear? One week after my daughter died I turned to my occupation, writing, to recover from multiple losses. In fact, I made a promise to myself: “I will write my way through grief.” I’m a health and wellness writer and his promise changed the focus of my writing to grief recovery. Eight grief resources have come from this promise. More important, I’ve met national grief experts and many other parents who have suffered the death of a child. No doubt about it, my life is richer because of these people.

What was the hardest part about writing this book? Definitely
the revision. I literally didn’t touch the book for a year after I
first wrote it, because I didn’t know how to revise it. I ended up
taking a course on revision, which helped a lot. I no longer fear
revision, and I think I’m even getting pretty good at it.
Can you see yourself in any of your characters? I think there’s a part of me in everyone of my characters. Though some are more like me than the others.
How do you promote this book? I
promote through my social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook. I
also have a blog, and occasionally do interviews and guest posts.
Will you write others in this same genre? Yes,
definitely. I love fantasy and am soon going to start on Book 3 of my
Anniversary of the Veil series. This book will conclude the series, and
then I will start a new one. I’ve had the idea for it in my head for the
longest time, and I’m eager to start writing.

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be? That’s easy, Saving Mary: The Possession and The Deliverance. I became a Christian during my exorcism. How did you come up with the title of your book? When I first began writing, I called the manuscript The Testimony. But a year or two into it, it became obvious that there were two books stuck in there together. A few more months later and I had three books. It just seemed natural to call them Studying…The Testimony, Living…The Testimony and Preparing…The Testimony. If you pick up Studying…The Testimony, you are going to get a pretty deep study regarding the testimony of Jesus. If you pick up Living…The Testimony, you are going to read about how to mix life with the testimony of Jesus. If you pick up Preparing…The Testimony, then I’ve inspired you to write your own testimony. I called my spiritual memoir Saving Mary: The Possession because just after my exorcism my boyfriend convinced me to go to a Bible study. I had already decided, by this time, that I would keep my possession and exorcism a secret. (It seemed all just a bit too strange to talk about.) During the Bible study, however, BAM! A woman caught me off guard. She came up to me at the end of the study and told me that God spoke to her. “God told me to tell you that you remind him of Mary Magdalene—the woman from whom Jesus cast out seven demons.” It seemed that I wanted to keep my life a secret, but God didn’t get my memo! I didn’t go to another Bible study for over a year after that. Those prophetic people, you can always count on them to spice things up! Are there any surprises in your book? At the end of the first two books in The Testimony series, I’ve included an appendix. The first appendix is on the subject of hell. When I write a Bible study, I don’t tell everyone what I already know. Instead, I dive into a subject and find out what I didn’t know. I was shocked by what I found out about hell. I mean, some of it we know—but when you put the whole story together, it’s mind-blowing. You start to wonder, “Why is no one teaching this?” …And you sort of feel like you’ve been cheated. The appendix at the end of Living…The Testimony is about the Sabbath Rest. It’s something every Christian should know, but unfortunately we don’t. I’ve tried to make the appendix as easy to understand as possible…I think I succeeded.
Give us a glimpse into a typical day in your day starting when you wake up till you lie down again. My day is pretty boring. I get up and I pray…I then make coffee. I then crawl back into bed and either read a book or answer emails. At that point my husband leaves for work. Then I wake the kids up and get them some breakfast: yogurt, cereal and fruit. I then read some more or answer emails. I then tell my kids to get dressed. I then make lunches. (Bored yet?) I get a fresh coffee and read or answer emails. I then remind my kids to brush their teeth, and then I get the kids out the door so they can catch their rides to school. I then jump in the shower and then I work. Work entails: reading, answering emails, writing, editing, marketing, blogging, filing. I do this for the next five hours then I jump in my car and rush to begin the cycle of picking up kids and getting them to soccer, basketball or softball. When I get home, I feed everyone some kind of food I’ve managed to scrape together. Then me and my hubby go for a walk and talk about going on vacation to Greece. This is where I am right now in my life. I love being with my family.
What’s your favorite season/weather? I like summer because I can go back to Canada to visit family. I like hot weather with a cold coffee or a Coke, which my mom says I should stop drinking because it rots my gut. (But I don’t want to stop drinking it, and I’m not going to stop using my microwave either, which Mom tells me will change the chemical structure of my food. She also says not to eat expired cake mix, but I can’t remember why.)

Where do you see yourself in five years? Hopefully still writing and still loving it as much as I do now. What are your current writing projects now? Right now I am putting the final touches to the edits of Dead Chaos, the last book in my Young Adult Valkyrie series. We’re looking at a release end of September. I’m also chugging my way through the word count for Lost Soul the second book in my New Adult Urban Fantasy series. I should have this written and ready for revisions by the end of September. Are you reading any interesting books at the moment? Shadows by Ilsa J. Bick, Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas, The Killing Place by Tess Gerritsen, and Game of Thrones by GRR Martin What contributes to making a writer successful? If you apply yourself, set your goals, write those books and don’t be afraid of hard work success is waiting for you. And working at you craft is so very important. Writers are learning all the time, be open to learning new ways, new styles, new tricks. If you are happy to continue learning and being a better writer then you are on your way. It’s just a matter of working hard and writing well. What do you do to unwind and relax? A glass of wine and a good book at the end of the day, or dinner and a movie with DH to make it more special. What books did you love growing up? Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden and the Hardy Boys of course; Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, The Lord of the Rings Series. Who is your favorite author? It’s a tie- Stephen King, Deant Koontz and Marion Zimmer Bradley What book genre of books do you adore? Paranormal, fantasy and horror but I read everything – as long as the book holds my attention for the first ten pages I’ll read it.

M – Hopefully with a back catalogue of work and thinking up a new exciting plot. D – I really have no idea. I’d love to be writing full time, but who wouldn’t? M – Internet research is invaluable to fact check or look in detail at a location. D – Kboards, it’s a great resource for any writer looking for tips on almost every aspect of writing and the business. What contributes to making a writer successful? M – Research, review, a good story and robust editing. Alongside lots of luck. D – Having an original mind, being willing to learn and a good editor. Do you have any advice for writers? How has your upbringing influenced your writing? In lots of ways. I grew up in the Caribbean, in the Dominican Republican, where the tropical sun makes colors more brilliant and textures more pronounced. The island taught me about settings, characters, conflict and plot twists. Anything could happen any day, and even the implausible seemed routine. Dominicans are artists at heart and inspiration was easy to find. Their beliefs, stories and even their music, has influenced my style. How would you describe your creative process while writing The Curse Giver? My initial creative process is subconscious at first and then tied by a very loose outline to my writing journey, which entails equal measures of disciplined plotting and stream-of-consciousness writing. Most of the time my creative process is sparked by a scene, a vivid image that fuels an intricate plot. I hate to repeat this because literature snobs everywhere frown upon it, but it’s the truth: Both the Stonewiser series and The Curse Giver were born in my dreams. In the case of The Curse Giver, I dreamed about this wretched man, bitter and angry, who had been cursed to live in fear and die in agony and was desperately searching for a way to defeat his curse. The image was very powerful and unforgettable. It got me thinking. What type of curse ailed him? Something very dark, I told myself, something shocking, something that forced him to straddle the boundaries between good and evil, duty and crime. From then on, the story took off, acquiring a life of its own, with the outline as a guide but the plot twists and the characters in charge. That’s how I wrote The Curse Giver. When did you first know you could be a writer? I think I’ve known it all along. It was just a matter of finding the right time in my life to go for it. What is the most rewarding part of being an author? The readers, definitively the readers. What genre are you most comfortable writing? I’m most comfortable writing fantasy, romance and historical fiction. I really like to mix all of these elements. I often use medieval history to validate the details in my fantasy stories just as I use romance to deepen, enrich and authenticate my characters. My latest novel, The Curse Giver, is all of that plus mystery and intrigue. When or where do you get your best writing ideas? The shower, definitively the shower. Maybe it’s because I can’t sing, so instead, I think. Seriously, I think that after a long night writing, a hot shower relaxes the body, clears the mind and allows the stories to flow. I also get a lot of ideas in my dreams when I’m asleep. Driving is good too. In fact, I have a pen and pad always ready in my car. The scribbles are really hard to read, and so that you know, I only update my notes during long red lights. Have you ever used anyone from your real life encounters in any of your books? I’ve never consciously set out to model one of my characters after anyone in particular. On the other hand, I’m sure I’ve used all of my life experiences and observations to construct my worlds and conceive my characters. In that sense, everything I do, every place I go and everyone I’ve met has somehow contributed to my stories. What is a regular writing day like for you? I sit down to write sometime between eight or nine in the evening and write through the night. I go to bed anywhere between three and six and sleep the morning away. I get up around ten or eleven and spend the afternoon editing what I did the night before and taking care of the business aspects of writing. The best part: It’s my schedule and I get to choose my office’s dress code, which, by the way, is a notch below casual, super comfy. The biggest challenge: Talk about not being a morning person! When you were published for the first time, which route did you go – mainstream, small press, vanity published, or self-published and why or how did you choose this route? I went with a small press, a micro press really, mostly because I knew that, as a new author, I was going to have a hard time getting picked up by a larger press, but also because the small press offered me an incredible opportunity and lots of involvement in the process of publishing my book. For The Curse Giver, I went with Twilight Times Books, a really great independent press that publishes in critically acclaimed books. If you could give one book promotion tip to new authors, what would that be? I think that word of mouth continues to be the best and most reliable way of promoting a book and therefore any and all situations where people are blogging, tweeting, posting, reviewing, and talking about your book to their friends, readers and colleagues are very helpful to a book’s promotion. If you could be anywhere in the world other than where you are right now, where would that place be? Sitting in my writing chair, writing. What’s the best advice you can give to aspiring authors? If you are truly a writer, write! Write like the wind—this is actually the title of a writing series by my friend Aaron Paul Lazar—write as much as you can, whenever you can, however you can. Only by writing will you perfect your skills, polish your stories and develop the grit necessary to pursuit a path towards publication. Tell us about your book. What is it about and why did you write it? Open Door is about making choices and the reasons for making them. In some ways, it’s about not just accepting what’s given to you because you feel you have no choice. I get to develop that idea more in book two and three of the series, but Open Door sets up those issues. I wrote the book because my daughters were reading Young Adult fiction and I wanted to write in that genre. I did not, however, want to write about vampires. I’d always liked traditional, gothic tales about rambling mansions and supernatural forces, so I developed an idea along those lines. When you are not writing, how do you like to relax? I love a good movie, like Side Effects or The King’s Speech. I also enjoy following a great TV series. Right now, we love “Under the Dome.” Watching “Hemlock Grove” on Netflix was great, too. But Mike and I still have young children, so some weekends we just have a wonderful time hanging out at the Little Rock Zoo or the River Market. How do you feel about websites like Facebook and twitter? Are they a good thing? The internet is a wonderful thing, and twitter and Facebook have opened doors for me that I never could have found otherwise. I cannot imagine what it might have been like to be able to just go one Facebook, like an author’s page, and interact with her there. What a thrill that would have been for me as a kid! How do you think people perceive writers? This always makes me laugh, because when I was just out of college and people heard I was writing a book, sometimes they would ask, “Am I in it?!” like they feared I would come out with the next Peyton Place. The following response, after I reassured them that no, they were not in it, was often, “You know, I’ve always wanted to write a book.” So I guess that I think most people see writing as something they could do if only they had the time. And, I think it sometimes makes people a little nervous to be around those who actually make the time. What’s your next project? I wrote a novel for adults that I’m describing as women’s fiction and magic realism. Right now I’m revising the final book in the Legacy trilogy. After all that, I want to do a Young Adult mystery series.

Do you have an organized process or tips for writing well? Do you have a writing schedule? I don’t have much of a schedule, except that I like to crank out about 10,000 words a week. As long as I keep doing that, I stay in a rhythm and can turn out a first draft in about two-and-a-half months. Unless migraines and insomnia get in the way  Sometimes it’s so hard to keep at it – What keeps you going? My love for the people in my head. As long as I keep writing about them, they live on. I get to flirt with them, fall in love with them, and protect them, over and over and over again. Plus, if I didn’t give all the people in my head a chance to speak, I’d have to be heavily medicated. What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel? If I’ve provoked any feelings at all – whether I’ve repulsed you or aroused you – then I’ve done my job. What’s your next project? SILVER: Lex Talionis (Outlier Trilogy #1, SILVER Series #8). Be prepared: worlds are colliding … well, they’re brushing against one another very gently. Ella ‘Silver’ Cross meets Carmen Wild from The Prisonworld Trilogy. Last book you purchased? Tell us about it. I bought Bones in Her Pocket by Kathy Reichs. It’s her first novelette ebook, and it was okay. I liked the first two thirds of it, then it ended with something completely random which seemingly had no real connection to the rest of the book. I felt like she was using the book as a way to promote her views about the cruelty of puppy mills. Which is fine. Puppy mills are cruel and should be shut down. But if you’re writing a book, at least weave your message into the storyline Don’t just throw it on top and expect it to blend.

What genre are you most comfortable writing?
I love writing romance, but I can picture writing paranormal and even a thriller at some time down the road.
What inspired you to write your first book?
My husband has been writing since high school. He’s been a published author for over a decade and over the years I’ve always been his first reader. I guess you could say I’ve become a writer out of osmosis. After giving my input for so long, I finally decided I wanted to tackle my own stories. While Glen mostly writes horror stories, I much prefer HEA (happily ever afters).
Write now I write because I enjoy it. Even with indie publishing, I think selling the amount of books it would take to make writing a career is still a lot like winning the lottery. Sure, some people win, but the odds are against it.
Have you developed a specific writing style?
My goal is to try to establish the characters’ emotions. You can’t have a romance without an emphasis on emotions. I figure, emotions + conflict = a recipe for a successful romance novel.
How much of the book is realistic?
Julia is set, as are all the books in the Good Life series, in Harmony Grove, Iowa. These are stories about small town charm and hard-working people. I don’t sugarcoat these aspects, even if some of the narrative is on the nostalgic end of the spectrum.

What colour represents your personality the most? My favourite colour is blue, the kind of dark blue you get in the “real world” of The Matrix where the characters are unplugged. I am also attracted by the shade of green distinctive to a monochrome monitor, something I can relate to as I am old enough to remember what the first IBM computers looked like. Green is a colour that has great significance in The Matrix as it symbolizes the world of the machines. The Matrix digital rain, with its falling green code representing the virtual reality of the Matrix, is also on the background of the cover of my intertextual study The Matrix and the Alice Books. What kind of films do you love to watch? Apart from the science fiction genre of which The Matrix is part of, I am increasingly interested in Chinese/Hong Kong film productions that succeed in portraying the history of China with a combination of excellent martial arts choreography, costumes faithful to the era described, all based in rather large sets. The fact that most Chinese martial arts flicks end with the death of the heroine and/or the main character, as opposed to the unrealistic happy ending style favoured by Hollywood films, is also something that really fascinates me. How do you feel about self-publishing? My very first book, The Spirit of Medieval Japan, appeared under the publishing wing of an NGO while dozens of my non-fiction articles and short stories were published in various academic journals and anthologies. Apart from public exposure, there was no monetary benefit. Among the books I have chosen to self-publish, The Matrix and the Alice Books has been the most successful financially. As a writer, to be paid for your writing is a huge reward. Now that one can read an e-book on an increasing score of gadgets, I think selfpublishing is a positive way for writers to make their work available to a very large section of the public. And if the writer did their job properly, then they might even see a return on their investment. What was the hardest part about writing The Matrix and the Alice Books? The first hurdle was finding a professor at my university to agree to supervise my thesis and then pleasing her with my work. Eventually, after three initial attempts, we agreed upon presenting the similarities between The Matrix and the Alice books using an intertextual framework. Did writing this book teach you anything? I started writing The Matrix and the Alice Books as my Master’s degree thesis at Assumption University in Bangkok, but the current version of the book is somewhat simplified so that it’s far more reader-friendly. What I’ve learned from writing this book was that websites can be quite ephemeral as they can go off line with absolutely no notice at all. Thus, it is very important to mention online sources not only with the link but also adding what date the link was last accessed.

How do you think people perceive writers? I think they imagine we are all independently wealthy or something. They also seem to think writing a book takes all of two hours! There is so much piracy and then people demanding books for free that I wonder if they realize how much writers truly bring in for their work. When you calculate how much you make for how many hours you work, it’s depressing. I try not to think about it. The other part is the timing. I will release a book and it’s out for three days at most before someone has read it and asks about a sequel. I always hear readers complaining they don’t want to wait two years for the next book. The publishing industry definitely needs to move quicker – especially with series – but a writer can only write so fast. Add in editing and revising and we need time. Especially since, like I said in the first part of this question, we are probably working a day job to fund this insane hobby we have. How do you feel about self-publishing? I think it’s no different than traditional publishing, except it’s harder to get exposure. Are there terrible books out there that were self-published? Yes. Of course. Are there terrible books on the New York Times bestseller list? You bet. How the book got into readers’ hands isn’t important. What is important is getting it into those hands. How many friends does a person need? I’m a socially anxious person. I don’t like large crowds (although I love the city, but no one is paying attention to you in a city) of people. I much prefer to sit down quietly with a couple of people and talk. So I say a few that can really be trusted. Acquaintances are different, but real friends? I’d rather focus on the handful of them that exist than try to increase quantity. What does love mean to you? It’s the reason we keep going, the reason we get out of bed, and the reason we don’t let the world and all of its problems break us. It’s the reason we are alive. When you get free time on the internet or you go to the library – what do you want to read about? Anything. I love stories that transport me into someone else’s life and I love to learn. There is little I won’t read.

What else do you do to make money, other than write? It is rare today for writers to be full time… I am so lucky to say that right now I write full time. It’s not easy! I put in about 12-15 hours per day. And I work 7 days a week. But it’s a dream come true right now. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? In a small cabin near a lake in Maine. My dream. How do you write – lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk? laptop at my desk. I’m in a basement that overlooks a mountain. It’s beautiful… every morning I watch the sun rise while I write. How much sleep do you need to be your best? I get about 5-6 hours a night. That’s perfect for me. Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge and thank for their support? My readers. Honestly. I know every author does that… but without them, where am I? From the second I started Brothers of Rock, the readers took it and ran with it. It was supposed to be five books and nothing more. BUT now it’s going to 10 books and maybe more! Because of the readers, I brought the western romance series to life. It’s just so heart warming and filling. J
